American actress (1913–1970) whose promising career was cut short by alcoholism; during what should have been the prime of her career, she spent several years in mental institutions before attempting an acting comeback in the late 1950s. Scarce vintage pearl-finish 11 x 14 studio portrait of Farmer as she appeared in the 1937 production of Golden Boy, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Fred, with all love and gratitude, Frances.” Reverse bears a Group Theatre Production stamp. In fine condition, with light rippling and a few creases and spots of discoloration to background. Eager to boost her reputation as a serious actress Farmer left Hollywood in 1937 to perform in summer stock productions in Westchester, New York. After earning initial middling reviews, Golden Boy became a huge hit behind the box-office appeal of Farmer and took off on a national tour the following year. A solemn, oversized portrait of the sought-after actress.
