Frances Cleveland, as First Lady Signature Frances Cleveland, as First Lady, Returns a Not Quite Wo
Frances Cleveland, as First Lady, Returns a Not Quite "Worthless" Swimsuit! Autograph Letter Signed (twice: as "Frances E. Cleveland" and "Mrs. Grover Cleveland"), as First Lady, 3 pages, recto and, 4.5" by 7", on her monogrammed stationery, Gray Gables, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, August 21, [18]94. To C.F. Hovey & Co., a landmark Boston dry goods establishment. In very fine condition. One of the most popular of First Ladies charmingly returns a defective swimsuit. In full: "I do not feel like saying that the bathing suit you sent me was a 'worthless article' -- it was not that for it could be easily repaired. I only felt it was hardly worth its full price because it frayed in a seam & burst out the second time it was used. I wish to order some ribbon -- a piece of cream white satin on one side No 5 plain. Will you kindly send me a bill for it -- and what you think a fair price for a slightly damaged $5.50 bathing suit. I wish to thank you for your kindness and courtesy in returning my check. The article did not seem to me sufficiently damaged to accept your generous adjustment." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
