France very rare 1766 original Royal decree concerning Canadian Card Money
A three pages original folio document published by the Royal Printer at Paris , January 17, 1766. Ex : Archives Nationales, with annulation stamp in red and black. This is a decree of the King's State Council, held at Versailles, with the King present, concerning the destruction by burning of all Canadian issued card money. A fascinating document, with an engraved vignette of national military symbols at the top, measuring 55 x 131 MM . The folio itself measures 21 x 27 Cm. The text is sharp, clear and complete, though the edges of the paper are frayed, particularely at the bottom. A rare and important document of the history and numismatics of French Canada. Little Canadian Card Money must have found its way to France, where it was neither legal tender nor accepted in commerce. As well , this decree had no application whatsoever in Canada , as the country was in British hands since 1760, and formal transfer of sovereignly was concluded at the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Yet most card money in New France had already been destroyed by successive administrations, as earlier series were demonetized and replaced. Still this decree changes the Sieur de la Rochette with the task of overseeing the burning of whaterver card money could be found, and of keeping an account of what was destroyed.
