Framed Cassilly Adams/Otto Becker Print, "Custer's Last Fight"

Originally painted in 1884, eight years after the Battle of Little Bighorn, Cassilly Adams' "Custer's Last Fight" depicts an overall view of the closing moments of the Battle, with Custer in his signature buckskin jacket in the center, lashing out with his sword in his right hand and wielding his empty revolver as a club with his left. Meanwhile, the Indians are closing in, some delivering fatal blows to cavalrymen, others getting ahead of themselves and starting to loot and scalp the bodies, and one to Custer's immediate left being struck down by what may be the last swing of his blade. Among the crowd are several riflemen and pistoliers drawing beads on the Colonel; even to one who didn't know the story of the battle the outcome would be fairly unambiguous. In 1888, Adolphus Busch purchased the rights to the painting from Adams, and by 1896 the prints would be in bars and saloons throughout the United States as part of an advertising push coinciding with the release of Michelob Beer, in the process making it one of the most well known pieces of American art. With the frame, the print measures 42 1/2 inches wide and 28 1/2 inches tall, with the signature "O Becker" (Otto Becker, printmaker, who performed the final cleanup of Adams' work before printing began) in the lower right corner. No Anheuser-Busch markings are present; the exact circumstances behind this are unknown.

Excellent. The frame shows some minor separation at the corners, with some mild scuffing and wear. The print itself is excellent, with some light flaking at the corners and a few stains and small holes. A chance to own a high quality printing of one of the most well known pieces of American Art.
