The latter half of the 19th century saw major growth and development in the American West, especially in mining communities like Virginia City. More supplies were needed to support the businesses and communities, thus the need for lumber was inevitable. Lake Tahoe, with its numerous supplies of natural resources was the perfect solution. 1873 saw the birth of the Carson & Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company, formed by 2 Virginia City executives of the VC narrow- gauge railroad system and a rich banker. Together the men had the money and transportation to get supplies quickly to the Comstock. The Company was successful for several years, but the deforestation of Lake Tahoe put an end to the Carson & Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Co., they closed their doors in 1890s. This photograph shows the J.H. Martin Camp in South Lake Tahoe. The train featured is the Baldwin Locomotive. The engine was sold in 1899 to the Lake Tahoe Railway & Transportation Co. and scrapped in 1926. Although the quality of the photograph is poor, it is an extremely rare photograph. Photograph measures 9” x 7.5” and 14.25” x 16.” [Ref: Stopping Time: A Rephotographic Survey of Lake Tahoe, Peter Goin, C. Elizabeth Raymond, and Robert E.
