Framed 1864 Harper's Weekly Thomas Nast Engraving. Measures 22.75" x 16.5", framed to an overall size of 23" x 17". In the frame is actually the entire Thanksgiving Day issue of Harper's Weekly from Saturday, December 3, 1864. It is opened to the centerfold, which is a beautiful Thomas Nast engraving. Just five short months before Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in April, 1865, this handsome engraving appeared in the most widely-read periodical of the day. It shows a highly optimistic series of eight small engravings relating to the current Union experience in the Civil War. The feeling of the engraving is that a Union victory is imminent, and that President Lincoln is literally at the center of it all. The centerpiece of this centerfold shows Lincoln in the middle of a celebratory crowd, shaking the hand of a Union soldier as they both stand on the Confederate flag. How prescient this piece turned out to be! The magazine is in fine condition, with one small indention to the right side of the frame. A truly remarkable display piece.

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Large (view shipping information)
