Frame designs attributed to Dagobert Peche and Josef Hoffmann, Galerie Welz Some time ago, these wooden frame designs appeared in the Max Welz company in Vienna together with some workshop drawings. For the three designs figuring under no. 1a there are comparable preliminary drawings by Dagobert Pesche in the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) (inv. nos. KI12678/5; KI12678/7; KI12678/42). As to no. 1b, there is a workshop drawing of the Welz company by Josef Hoffmann (according to Henriette Welz-Helmschlag - she took the company over from her father Max Welz in 1938 and had been working there before for many years) which under no. 8 includes a preliminary drawing for the design in question. This workshop drawing was made after a Josef Hoffmann design. At first sight, the Hoffmann design and also the workshop drawing (known to the Dorotheum) have nothing in common with the well-known so-called Hoffmann frame. However, in his later period, Hoffmann used to draw inspirations from his Wiener WerkstStte colleague Dagobert Peche, who created his designs with rather little consideration of the material. Delicate foliate and ornamental bands most finely cut into the surface seem to spin around the wood, as can be seen in the present designs by Peche. They also show the famous "Peche stars". These designs were so costly that not even the Wiener WerkstStte managed to realize them. So they remained dream designs. EURO 1.600 - 1.800 US $ 1,400 - 1,600
