Fractional Currency Shield, With Pink
Fractional Currency Shield, With Pink Background. There are perhaps two dozen Pink Fractional Currency Shields in existence. As with virtually all Pink and Green Shields, all four hand autographed Third Issue notes are signed by Colby and Spinner, and the rare hand-signed Colby-Spinner Grant-Sherman is particularly nice--that note alone would be worth several thousand dollars on today's market. The pink background has turned slightly toward lavender, and is quite attractive. The shield is totally free of water stains, and its only flaw is a short tear at the bottom center extending about one inch into the shield, but not touching any notes. Between the two 3c notes at the bottom of the shield, someone has penciled in the inaccurate date 1862, which is several years before these were actually produced. The colors of the notes are excellent, with the exception, as always, of the 25c Second Issue back, which has turned light blue from exposure to light. Of particular interest is the fact that the bronze overprint on all the Second and Third Issue notes is reflectively bright with its full, original color--something that is almost never the case with shields. The shield is housed in a modern blond-wood frame that goes perfectly with the color of the notes and background.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
