<B>Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background.</B></I> The frame, often referred to as original, is contemporary to the period of the shield, but in fact the shields were distributed unframed. This particular frame also has the original wood back made of thin, wide boards. Although this shield does show a fair amount of water staining at the bottom, the flaw does not affect the notes, and the notes themselves are quite a bit brighter than on most shields. The red backs in particular have held up very nicely--generally indicative of a shield kept away from natural light. The 25c Second Issue back, as always, is the most light-struck, having turned blue-green from its original purple. All four hand-signed notes are Jeffries-Spinner, as is typically the case for gray shields. Ready for hanging in the home or office.
