Fr. UNL Hessler X188E $5000 1898
Fr. UNL Hessler X188E $5000 1898 Spanish-American War Registered Bond Very Fine. This is a very rare bond as Hessler has assigned his highest rarity rating of R8, 1 to 3 known for the entire issue of six denominations. This ten and twenty years loan signed by the Register of the Treasury, J.W. Lyons, was issued to meet the demands of the Spanish-American War. This example was issued on December 2, 1898 to the banking house of Harvey Fisk & Sons, one of the "Big Four" at the time on Wall Street. In turn, it was assigned to "Treas. of the U.S. in trust for the Nat. Exchange Bank of Wheeling W. Va. as security for circulation." This is a great item for both bond and National Bank Note collectors. This example has an approximate three-fourths of an inch hole cancel. It was also once taped into a registry book and later removed. This removal has left glue residue, tape, skin marks, and a small amount of paper loss behind. There are also pinholes and edge tears noticed with the longest being half an inch. Nonetheless, the orange and black face remains attractive on this historical collectible. The vignette on the left is of Civilization and the right vignette is of America Seizing the Lightning which is also seen on $10 First and Second Charter National Bank Notes. Simply, it is a highly desirable paper item.

Coin Engraver: probably Joseph Wright

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
