Fr. 963b $20 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note
Fr. 963b $20 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Very Fine 35. San Francisco is equal to the rarest districts for Red Seal Twenties, with only 13 pieces known for "a" and "b" combined. This "b" has the slight edge in rarity with only six pieces reported including Tom's finest known. Collectors, and believe it or not most dealers, tend to downplay price performance. We get caught-up in eye appeal, rarity, frequency of appearance etc. But once in a while, price history catches our eye. Tom bought this note at the March 12, 1991 Stack's Sale for $225. There was no other auction appearance of this number until April of 2006 when we auctioned a Fine for $4025. With two of the only six known pieces permanently impounded (one in the Smithsonian, the other in the San Francisco Fed), auction appearances of this number will likely stay decades apart. This is the finest graded, and will very likely remain the finest known forever. It has the eye appeal of a XF-AU, perfect color and ideal centering. A wonderful combination of grade and rarity.
From The Thomas M.
