Fr. 871a $5 1914 Federal Reserve Note New. All large si Fr. 871a $5 1914 Federal Reserve Note New. All large size U.S. Currency had serial numbers consisting of up to eight numerical digits, plus prefix and suffix letters. When the 99,999,999th note in a given block was reached, the last note on the sheet received the hand-set, nine-digit serial number 100,000,000. The following note on the next sheet would be given serial number 1 with the next letter suffix, in this case G1B (the note just offered in the prior lot). This wonderful nine-digit example comes to us from a different consignor than the serial number 1 example above, meaning that these two notes are at last reunited for the first time in at least 50 years. It is fully uncirculated and is essentially a Gem, although there is an internal tear at the bottom of Lincoln's portrait that has apparently been there for many years. The tear is barely visible when the note is displayed flat, and the note has an attractive appearance overall. It last appeared as part of J.W. Thompson's collection in Stack's March, 1991 sale, where it realized the then-princely sum of $8,525. Before that, it appeared in a Kagin's sale in July, 1978, and was once owned by both William A. Philpott, Jr. and Col. E.H.R. Green. This is the first opportunity in several collecting generations for this note and the one before to be purchased at the same time, and we expect the winning bidder of the prior lot to be a competitive bidder on this note, as well. In any case, don't expect spirited bidding on this one to end before the hammer price reaches or exceeds. . .

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:17691
