Fr. 377 $100 1890 Treasury Note Choice New. Watermelon $100's have always held a special allure for currency collectors. Only about forty examples of the type are known and one removes the government held pieces (seven), the pieces that have not been seen on the market in years (seven more), that does not leave a whole lot of notes to go around for this one-number type. Only four notes have been reported as Uncirculated in the Gengerke Census, this one and three others. Those three others are within a serial number range of four and two of them are impounded, one in the Smithsonian, and another in the ANA Money Museum. The last time this note reached the market was in March of 2001 when Lyn Knight auctioned if for $209,000. At that sale, Lyn stated, "In my opinion this is the finest Watermelon note in private hands" and we see no reason to disagree. The note has magnificent color, broad margins, terrific paper surfaces, and ideal centering of both sides. A real beauty.
