Fr. 360 $5 1890 Treasury Note PMG Choice Very
Fr. 360 $5 1890 Treasury Note PMG Choice Very Fine 35. This is the very rarest of the Treasury Notes below the Twenty Dollar denomination with only thirteen pieces known. Only a single high-grade example is known, and no grading service has seen it. That note sold for $115,000 in its last auction appearance in 2006. Neither grading service has graded a Fr. 360 above the level of this note. PMG has seen three: a G 6, a F 12 and this Choice VF 35. PCGS has graded only one, a VF 30. This note has been previously reported on the census as a 45 (which it is not), but whatever the grade may be, we believe it to be the second finest known example, and it is the finest yet graded. CAA has handled only a single Fr. 360 in all of our nineteen years of sales. Rarities of this caliber only reach the market when highly important collections such as Tom Flynn's are dispersed. It could be many years before another Fr. 360 is again offered.
From The Thomas M.
