Fr. 348 $1 1890 Treasury Note PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. The scarcest by far of the $1 1890's, with only 50 examples listed in the Track & Price census. This lovely Choice New example is a new piece to the census, and it's extremely close to the top. Track & Price lists only a single example above 64; that is the lone PCGS graded 65, which is the only note they've graded new. PMG has also graded one 65 and this 64. It is unlikely that very many more Fr. 348's will ever fall in the 63-and-higher grade range, as all but seven of the known uncertified pieces grade 45 and lower. A rare note in any grade and an extremely important piece at this level. The PCGS 65 realized over $16,000 in October of '05 and no uncirculated piece - certified or not - has sold at auction since that time.
From The Thomas M.
