Everett was the valedictorian of his class of 1811 at Harvard University, served in Congress from 1825-1836 and the United States Senate in 1852-1853. He was also Governor of Massachusetts from 1836-1839 and the Vice Presidential candidate on the Constitutional Union ticket in the election of 1860.
