Fr. 317 $20 1891 Silver Certificate Choice About
Fr. 317 $20 1891 Silver Certificate Choice About New. All Serial Number One Large Size notes are highly significant, very rare, and much sought-after items, and, although they bring very solid prices whenever they appear, certain design types have multiple Serial Number One examples known. This $20 1891 Silver Certificate is the only Serial Number One note ever produced for the entire series. Serial numbers began with this Serial Number One Fr. 317 and ran straight through Serial Number 320, the final Red Seal number. The Blue Seal type, Fr. 321 and Fr. 322, started with a separate series and a Serial Number One note was produced there, but the lowest numbered example from the Blue Seals is H158. This gorgeous note is the only $20 1891 Red Seal Silver Certificate Number One note ever produced. It has all its original embossing, ideal color, huge margins, and all the attributes of a perfect Gem save for two soft, broad corner-folds. The note had no history prior to its appearance in 1984, when it appeared in a NASCA Sale realizing $5,500. It was off the market for six years until it resurfaced again in Stack's January 1990 Sale where it realized $9,900--an incredibly strong price for that time. The note became part of the John Whitney Walter Collection where it remained until last year when it auctioned for $32,210. Although only a rather short time has passed since that sale, the market has changed considerably and the piece will likely far exceed that previous level.
