Fr. 267 $5 1891 Silver Certificate PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. At this grade level, this type is far scarcer than the 1886 variety with the Silver Dollars on the back. Due to the popularity of that Silver Dollar Back, the earlier type consistently realizes well over $20,000 at the 65 level. These 1891 Fives, with identical face designs, are considerably rarer, yet they realize only about $8000 at the 65 grade level. The census numbers are borne out by PMG's population report, which shows 29 Silver Dollar Backs graded 65 and over, and only twelve 1891's. Value and rarity can be quibbled over all day; what cannot be debated is the exceptional quality of this piece. It is 100% fully bright, ideally centered on both sides, and it's loaded with original embossing, which can be seen simply by looking at the note, or if you wish, by reading the holder which states, "Exceptional Paper Quality."
From The Thomas M.
