Fr. 2230-E $10000 1928 Federal Reserve Note. Choice Crisp Uncirculated.
A spectacular start to this utterly extraordinary section, which offers three $10,000 1928 examples and an amazing 12 1934 $10,000 notes, more than most dealers or auction houses are privileged to handle in a lifetime. We sold this note to our consignor in our May, 1998 sale, where we noted that "This Atlanta district note could well be the finest example of its type which will ever be offered. Our consignor was justly proud of this extraordinary note, which he considered the centerpiece to his collection of high denomination notes. It's certain its next owner will feel the same pride as he looks at this wonderful note." Our words were somewhat prophetic, as the newest research by Steven Sullivan indicates a total of only eight Series 1928 $10,000 examples extant (two of which are held in institutional hands), with this the only example known from the Richmond district and the only specimen graded as uncirculated from any district. When we last offered this piece it realized over $121,000, a record price for any small size note (against a pre-sale estimate of $45,000-65,000), and, in a considerably more knowledge based market, we see no reason why it will not bring that or more tonight by the time the hammer falls.
