Fr. 22 $1 1875 Legal Tender PCGS Choice About
Fr. 22 $1 1875 Legal Tender PCGS Choice About New 58. PCGS has noted, "Doubled Series Date," on their holder. This is one of the most interesting and little-known varieties in US currency. We sold two other Fr. 22's with this same error in the past. This one, which is new to the census, falls right in the middle of those two. We sold one of them in May of 1998 for $7150. That note was also from plate 35. Plate 35 has the doubled "of 1875," in "Series of 1875," at the upper left. This piece represents the sixth known example of this erroneously engraved plate. An interesting fact is that this same plate was in service long enough to be used for at least three different Friedberg numbers: Fr. 20, 22 and 25. All six examples that we have examined of this error come from plate position "B"; we have seen other notes from plate 35 that do not exhibit this error. It is certainly possible, indeed it's starting to seem likely, that this error exists only in the "B" position. Aside from the intriguing error, this is an important note simply as a Fr. 22, as only 21 examples are known in all grades combined, with the vast majority being well circulated.
From The Thomas M.
