<B>Fr. 212f $500 1865 Interest Bearing Note Very Fine Cancelled.</B></I> Unique for the number with one coupon remaining. The note has been cancelled with about a dozen small round punch holes through the signature blocks and also across the one remaining coupon. This is just conjecture on our part, but it appears as though this only remaining example of this type owes its survival to the fact that it was pulled from the normal course that would have lead to its destruction after redemption due to some fascinating alterations caused without doubt when this note was redeemed, removed from the Treasury, and presented for redemption a second time. The note was originally Serial Number 78116, a number which has been penned below the right-hand serial number. The final "6" was removed from both serial numbers on the note and also where the serial number appears on the coupon. The payee's name was also removed, which was caught in the Bureau. On the back of the note in pen, "writing has evidently been removed from the payee mark of this note SMC June 26/68." SMC is almost certainly Spencer Clark who was head of the National Currency Bureau (soon to become the BEP). Without question, this note has quite a story to tell. In any event, it is a beautiful piece with huge margins, stunning color for the grade, and no flaws save for a large number of tiny pinholes, the aforementioned cancels, and a missing piece of margin at the lower left. When last on the market in a December 1998 Lyn Knight sale, this particular note realized $71,500, a number that could be reached or exceeded... Lot:16765
