Fr. 212e $100 1865 Interest Bearing Note Very Fine.
Fr. 212e $100 1865 Interest Bearing Note Very Fine. There are three examples of this number known to exist, one of which is permanently impounded in the Smithsonian Institution having been transferred there by the Treasury Department in 1978. Of the remaining two notes, this piece is by far the finest. The note retains three of its original five coupons, each of which is redeemable for $3.65. The note is beautifully margined, perfectly natural, and totally free of any problems, repairs, or restorations of any kind. The colors are beautifully bright and the bronze "100" on the back is bright and wholly free of the normal green corrosion. This spectacular note was previously part of the Amon Carter Collection and last appeared on the auction market in October 1987 when Hickman & Oakes sold it for, what was then the extraordinarily strong price of $30,000. The far lower grade (Good-Very Good Damaged) note realized $97,750 in May 1999 and was subsequently re-offered on a 2002 fix price list for $250,000. This piece, the finest known by a wide margin, could possibly approach that number. Lot:16764
