Fr. 212a $100 1864 Interest Bearing Note Choice Extre
Fr. 212a $100 1864 Interest Bearing Note Choice Extremely Fine. This is the second time we have handled this beautiful piece. The first was in our September 1997 sale where we described the note "One of only three examples known to exist. None had been known prior to 1995. Before that date, currency catalogs refer to this issue as 'probably issued,' three notes are now known to exist. One is the Friedberg illustration piece, graded Fine, which was offered in a Bill Youngerman Coin World ad of December 1996, at $49,500. The second example was sold by us on January 5, 1996, as lot 1336 for $40,700. This piece which was also reported in 1996 passed privately into the Celeste Collection and is now being offered publicly for the fist time. It is identical in grade and only two serial numbers away from the other piece we sold. It has the same pen notations as that note did, being hand-dated August 4, 1880 on both sides. That hand-written date is filled in on the appropriate line in a light red rubber stamp of the 'Treasury Department Office of the Secretary.' This note is slightly finer than that example due to better centering and broad even margins. To our best knowledge, the opportunity to acquire this note in any grade, let alone this finest known example, is not likely to repeat itself in the foreseeable future." At that sale, the note fell just short of its $50,000 estimate realizing $49,500. The other identical example re-sold in 1998 for the exact same $49,500. Lot:16761
