Fr. 212 $50 1864 Interest Bearing Note Fine-Very Fine
Fr. 212 $50 1864 Interest Bearing Note Fine-Very Fine. From our January 2001 sale, where it was described thusly: "A newly discovered piece, which brings the known census up to seven, one of which is in the Smithsonian. This piece has two coupons remaining and is one of only two known pieces to have any at all, the other of which has one and has not been seen since 1963. The note is free of major restorations, but it appears to have been strengthened along two heavy vertical folds, one of which ends in a 1/4 inch split at the top. We've sold two other Fr. 212's, both grading Fine: one in September of 1999 for $26,400 and the second in our January 2000 sale for $24,200. This piece is in better condition than either of the two others and has the tantalizing addition of the two Interest Coupons. It's a well margined piece with excellent ink and paper color remaining for the grade. We suspect, in the current climate, where demand for rarity is paramount, that this piece could reach or exceed...($50,000)." At that sale, it did indeed exceed its estimate realizing $63,250. While unlikely to reach that figure this evening, it may challenge. Lot:16760
