Fr. 202c Hessler X126H (1340b) $500 1861 Interest Bearing Note Proof Choice About New, PC. A small pencilled "1520" in the upper right-hand corner, and the style of mounting, tells us that this outstanding proof came from the heralded Vattemare Part Two Sale in September 1982 where it was lot 1520. This proof is similar in format as the Fr. 202a offered above. It is printed on both sides of normal bank note paper, and it was prepared for issue, but then punch cancelled with a small hole in each signature block, and then carefully mounted to a light card so that both sides can be viewed. This is another rare design type that is only known in proof or specimen form, and again less than a handful are known. Scrutiny leads to belief that this may be the plate note in An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans by Gene Hessler, as this proof and the one plated in the book are both plate letter C proofs. A center fold is found on the actual proof note, but it does not extend to the card stock, meaning that the fold was there before the mounting. Collectors of this material will feel like kids in a candy store with the many choices that abound tonight.
