Fr. 202a Hessler X126F (945b) $50 1861 Interest Bearing Note Proof Gem New, PC. This is an old friend from our January 2002 FUN auction. This design type is one of the rarest of all United States paper money. It is represented by a single signed and issued redeemable example, which we sold in our May 2001 Sale for just under $700,000. That note, and another issued note, which has been punched, cancelled, redeemed and now resides in the Bureau of the Public Debt in Washington D.C. are all that are listed in the census. The proof, which we now offer, is only the third example of this design type known. It is printed on both sides of normal bank note paper, and it is also hand numbered with serial number 2551, plate letter A. It apparently was a normally printed note prepared for issue, but then punch cancelled with a small hole in each signature block, and then carefully mounted to a light card so that both sides can be viewed. This last procedure is a trademark of notes from the Vattemare Collection. This proof surfaced in 1982, and was later traded privately to a major holding in 1985. It is also the plate note in An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans by Gene Hessler. This proof will have several interested parties clamoring for it tonight.
