The design is represented by only three known examples: this piece, which is the Friedberg plate note, the piece that had been in the Harry Bass Research Foundation and the Very Fine which is the Hessler illustration and has been off the market since the 1977 ANA Sale. This note is illustrated in Friedberg with tape repairs at the edges of the back and a poorly restored upper right hand corner. Prior to 1997, expert restorations have greatly improved the appearence of this note. All the tape is now gone without a trace and the upper right corner, as well as the upper left corner tip, have been properly and beautifully restored. This note, which was first sold by us in May of 1997, is rather closely margined all around and restored at the edges, but all of the major design features are solid and close to the Very Fine grade. The authorization date of the issue was March 3, 1863 and this is the only known example with the issue date of March 15, 1864. When we sold this note in May of 1997 it realized $26,400. It should certainly easily surpass that this evening.
