Fr. 198 $50 1863 Interest Bearing Note Fine, Restored
Fr. 198 $50 1863 Interest Bearing Note Fine, Restored. One of only three examples known, and quite handsome for the grade. Unfortunately, the note has rather extensive edge restorations although they have been accomplished so expertly that they nearly defy detection. The margins are close all the way around, and the colors remain rather strong. The note previously appeared as part of the Grinnell Collection, then was owned by F.C.C. Boyd, Robert Friedberg, Robert Schermerhorn, and Harry Bass. It was sold alone with the other Bass notes in May of 1999, where it realized $23,000. At that time, the restorations which are now expertly accomplished, were very crude and done with stamp hinges and tape. Having seen the before and after of this piece, it's almost difficult to believe it's the same note. Its value as well as its appearance has been massively enhanced by proper restoration. Lot:16751
