Fr. 198 $50 1863 Interest Bearing Note Extremely Fine
Fr. 198 $50 1863 Interest Bearing Note Extremely Fine. By far the finest of the three known examples of this number, which is one of the rarest types of the entire US Currency field. The design is represented by only three known examples: the piece we sold last January, which was restored and graded Fine, and realized $29,900. That piece was the Friedberg plate note. The second example is the low-grade piece that had been in the Harry Bass Research Foundation, and the third, which is this note, the Hessler illustration, which has been off the auction block since the 1977 ANA Sale. This piece is the finest known by a mile, grading fully Extremely Fine with absolutely ideal color, perfect original paper surfaces, lovely margins and not a hint of a repair or restoration of any kind. Only when incredible collections like this one are sold does the opportunity to acquire finest-known examples present itself. This irreplaceable note will remain a showpiece in its new owner's collection for as long as he cares to retain it. To our best knowledge, there simply is no other example of this type in anywhere near this state of preservation. Lot:16750
