Fr. 197a $20 1863 Interest Bearing Note Choice Extremely Fine. At the our Taylor Sale three months ago, we had an absolutely identical piece with the following description. "CAA has had pleasure of offering this absolutely gorgeous note once before. It was lot 1381 of our January 2001 FUN sale where it was described "The consecutive serial number to the magnificent example we sold in May 1997, and virtually identical as well. Only three high-grade examples of this Friedberg number exist in high grade; of the roughly two dozen pieces known, the majority are low grade and/or restored. This note gives the appearance of an absolute Gem, with good margins, perfect color, razor-sharp printing, and all the eye appeal in the world. It has three extremely light, natural folds that can be seen only when the note is examined at an angle to the light. Middle-of-the-book notes, Interest Bearing and Compound Interest Bearing alike, don't hold the interest of most collectors, as they are all almost invariably low grade, and lack eye appeal. This spectacular, unmolested piece will grab and hold the attention of the most jaded collector. It's a "Wonder Note" that deserves a place in the very finest of collections." In that mention of "only three high grade examples", this one was the third piece. The two consecutive notes mentioned above and this note are identical in every way and beyond that, the grade for the remaining twenty-three known notes rolls right of the table. We estimated our Taylor example at $35,000 and it charged right past that number, ultimately realizing $63,250. We would anticipate tonight's realization to be just about the same.
