Fr. 197 $20 1863 Interest Bearing Note Fine. This is one of only nine serial numbers reported and a piece that traces its provenance back to a December 1955 purchase by Dallas oilman Robert F. Schermerhorn. In fact, at one time Schermerhorn owned two of these rarities. The note presented tonight has nice color and eye appeal while exhibiting professional restoration upon close examination. Also, an approximate quarter inch top edge tear is noticed. The reference works make the distinction between Fr. 197 and Fr. 197a as Fr. 197's having been printed by the American Bank Note Company and Fr. 197a as being printed by the BEP. Either a third variety exists or the references are wrong. Both this note and the only other two Fr. 197s that we have handled have both the American Bank Note Company imprint on the left and the National Bank Note Company imprint at the bottom under the Act date. We sold the Taylor Family example of this Friedberg number in VF in February 2005 for $63,250.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
