Fr. 191a $20 1864 Compound Interest Treasury
Fr. 191a $20 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 20 NET. The VF 20 grade places this piece far further up in the condition census than one would expect. Many examples of this note, which has a total census of 52 pieces, are very heavily circulated and/or badly damaged. PMG has indicated that the 20 grade is "NET"--generally indicative of a problem or repair, but we see none and none have been mentioned on the holder. The note is in the Track & Price census as a VF 20 and it auctioned at that grade in 1996 when Tom acquired it. A very pleasing piece with bright ink colors and bronze that, while it has turned green, has not split the paper nor penetrated to the back. We sold a raw VF 20 for $12,362 in January 2005, and the only comparably third party graded piece was a PMG 30 which we sold last January for $27,600.
From The Thomas M.
