Fr. 191a $20 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note Very Fine. There are just over 50 examples of this rare number currently known, and although Martin Gengerke in his United States paper Money Records lists this note in his census as VG-Fine, damaged, repaired, it is clearly several grades higher. When we last sold this note two and a half years ago in our January, 2000 CAA sale in Orlando, it was described as having "an inconspicuous tape repair of a short split at the top center." That damage and repair is no longer visible, as the note has been professionally restored, so well in fact that even with the most careful inspection of the note it would be impossible to discern the location of the original damage. The average note of this type is seldom seen with good eye appeal, and technical grade is of much less importance than the overall appearance of these rare Compound Interest Treasury Notes. This example has original bronzing that has not darkened, and the red, black and green inks are fully bright. It has all of the appeal of an Uncirculated note, and should attract considerable interest from type collectors looking for an attractive representative of this difficult type.
