About Uncirculated.</B></I><BR>This is a rare note, with just six reported star examples out of an original printing of only 12,000 pieces. After a 1981 offering, twenty years went by without another auction appearance of any specimen, until a 2002 sale where a Fine example brought $2250 and a second offering last year (of a different note), also graded Fine, which saw a realization of over $6000. This example has been the focus of some controversy, having been listed in Dean Oakes' census as "Uncirculated washed." Dean later wrote (his letter is included with this lot) "Having never seen the $100 Star Cleveland # 3918 I put it in my listing as Unc washed as this is the way it was described to me. I got to see the note today 11/22/02 and will now list the note as unc with inadequate inking. I believe the note is original as issued." We will let our bidders make their own decision. Whatever that is, it is undisputable that this piece is by far the highest grade Cleveland hundred in the census.
