Gem Crisp Uncirculated.</B></I><BR>Only 24,000 stars were produced for the Atlanta district, with about fifteen survivors accounted for in all grades. Of that number, just two are listed as CU in the Oakes census, this piece and one other, that long ensconced in a major collection and very likely unavailable to the collecting fraternity for many years. Dr. Cookson obtained this piece from our September, 2000 Cincinnati auction, where we noted "This incredible piece is a well centered crackling fresh gem that appears to have emerged from the press this morning. We are hard pressed to find anything in this series upon which to base an estimate, as this piece may simply be impossible to duplicate in today's market....It would not surprise us to see this rarity exceed our estimate [which was $2500-4500] by a very considerable margin." After a determined floor battle between three collectors, Dr. Cookson emerged triumphant when the note was hammered down at $9350. In today's considerably more sophisticated and far more competitive market, with several collectors attempting to put together high grade sets of these rare stars, that figure may well be eclipsed before the hammer falls this evening.
