<B>Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Specimen Legal Tender Note. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.</B></I><BR>This perfectly margined note is the first of a quartet of Legal Tender Deuce Specimens in this auction. We have handled one other Small Size Legal Tender Specimen, a $100 which is also part of this auction. Opportunities in currency to view a progression of notes from one series to another provides collectors with information about practices in the BEP. This set, all of which boast H-G block 8 digit ladder serial numbers, reveals a change in the SPECIMEN overprint used between the Series 1953B and Series 1953C. At some point in the early 1960's while these two series were printed, the font used to designate the word Specimen was changed from measurements of 23mm down to 15mm beginning with Series 1953C. The style of the letters were changed slightly from blocklike with serifs to simply small and blocklike. Also starting with Series 1953C the word SPECIMEN was stamped twice on both sides, horizontally and vertical on the face and then twice vertically on the back. This practice was continued on for Series 1966 Legal Tender $100's and even into the 1970's as illustrated on the denomination set of Specimens that we handled for Series 1974.
