Fr. 1352 Milton 3R50.8a 50¢ Third Issue Justice F
Fr. 1352 Milton 3R50.8a 50¢ Third Issue Justice Fine. This is the second time we have offered this Friedberg 1352. It was part of the Martin Gengerke Collection, which we sold in January of 1995. At that sale, the note was described, "One of only two known, the second of which has never been seen publicly" (That second note has since surfaced as part of the Boyd Collection, and it was auctioned by Stack's last year for $126,500). "The note is printed on very heavy fiber paper. The printing is strong, with the exception of the top edge of the face, which is rather weak. The top and bottom margins are large, the right margin is adequate, with a miniscule chip and the left face margin is quite close. The upper and lower right corners are rounded, with the other two corners being sharp for the grade. The 'S,' '6' and '4' of the surcharge are distinct, and the '2' is weak but visible. This is one of the two key pieces to a collection of Fractional Currency, and its sale will allow another magnificent collection to become complete." In 1995, we estimated this note at $20,000-up, and it realized $29,700. There are now three examples known of Fr. 1352. The highest grade piece is the note that Stack's sold last year. This piece is second by a wide margin, and the third example is a low grade damaged and taped piece that surfaced at the 2004 Memphis show. ex-FCC Boyd, ex-New York dealer, acquired by Martin Gengerke in 1979, sold with his collection by CAA January 1995, then to a private collection, then to Tom Denly, then to Tom O'Mara.
