Fr. 1336 50c Third Issue Spinner Gem New. A note from the Hoffman Collection that brings together both real rarity and great quality. When we sold this note last time, in November of 1992, it was described, "far and away the finest example of this rare note that we have ever seen. It's hugely margined on all four sides, with just a hint of light offset smudging in the top margin only. The only defect whatsoever on this great little Fractional rarity is a corner tip fold which was present before the note was printed, as is clearly evidenced by the inking pattern on both sides. It is often years between appearances of a Fr. 1336 in any grade, so if you wish to add a top-quality example of this number to your holdings, don't let this one pass you by." We've seen a few other very nice pieces in the intervening eleven years, but to our knowledge and opinion, this remains the finest known. We've sold only two Gem examples: this piece, which realized $1567 in 1992, and another in our 1994 Memphis sale, which realized $2860. This piece, with its huge margins, deep original embossing and excellent color should far exceed that this evening. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
