Fr. 1330 Milton 3R50.18 50¢ Third Issue Spinner G
Fr. 1330 Milton 3R50.18 50¢ Third Issue Spinner Gem New. Previously Lot 334 from our January 1994 sale of the Wayne Liechty collection. It was described there, "A stunning example of the extremely rare, hand-signed Allison-New variety. Terrific color on both sides, bright bronze and excellent original paper surfaces. Fr. 1330 is the only opportunity to obtain a hand-signed John New U.S. Currency note." Allison and New were in office from June 30, 1875 until January 7, 1876. These Red Back Spinner notes should have been issued well prior to that. They were clearly not intended as a Regular Issue, but rather were signed to be given to friends or as some form of a patronage act. In any event, they became legal tender when signed, as Allison and New were legal signers. The majority of known 1330's grade CU and higher. No accurate census exists, but the presumed census is in the 20 to 30 range. This cataloger's personal guess is that three sheets of twelve were originally signed, and most of the notes have survived.
