Fr. 1236 Milton 3R5.1c 5¢ Third Issue Courtesy Au
Fr. 1236 Milton 3R5.1c 5¢ Third Issue Courtesy Autograph Gem New. A lovely little fresh, bright Red Back Clark with the bold courtesy autograph of Lee McClung, who was Treasurer from November 1, 1909 to November 21, 1912. This Clark note is the first piece from a gorgeous Red Back Set that was assembled by Milt Friedberg from two separate sources. Most of notes which comprise this set trace their origins to the Siegel Sale of the Lilly Collection. The 15¢ Grant-Sherman, which was clearly signed at the same time, was from a separate source. This Red Back Clark is the first piece from this perfectly matching set. The others appear below. Each bears the identical "Lee McClung - Treasurer of the U.S." inscription. On each of the six notes, the courtesy autograph is identical, varying only in size in proportion to the size of the note. At the Friedberg Sale we choose to offer these pieces individually so that multiple collectors would have a chance to own one. We commented, "on the other hand, it would be very nice to see this set remain together." It did; Tom O'Mara bought them all. We'll see again tonight if the set continues to remain together.
