Fr. 1230 Milton 1R5.4 5¢ First Issue Vertical Strip of Four Very Choice New. On the back, this note bears the stamp of J.N.T. Levick. Levick was a dealer in the 1880's who made a habit of stamping, dying and otherwise altering Fractional Currency. Many notes that went through his hands were simply rubber-stamped on the back with a Maltese cross, while other notes were emblazoned with this cross and his name - as well as occasionally his 54 William Street address. Bear in mind that these notes were practically current, and worth little or no premium when this occurred. This particular strip has his name rubber stamped in blue script, four Maltese crosses in black, and his name stamped a second time in red block letters with the 54 William Street address. Over the years, various collectors and dealers have foolishly mistaken Levick's silly alterations and dyings as legitimate varieties. This note bears several of his hallmarks.
