Fr. 1215 $100 1922 Gold Certificate Extremely Fine.
Fr. 1215 $100 1922 Gold Certificate Extremely Fine. This spectacular Gold Certificate error made its first public appearance in our May, 1993 auction sale where it was acquired by our dealer friend Stan Morycz. It was described there as "A newly discovered variety with the normally seen Red Seal printed in the identical gold color used for the large word "Gold," which appears on the front of the note along with the designs behind the serial numbers. This yellow ink was placed upon the seal plate after that same plate had been used to print the normal colored red seal on other notes, as under high magnification tiny flecks of the normal red color can be seen at the edges of the yellow ink that composes the seal. One of our colleagues feels that these tiny red flakes indicate an alteration. However, after careful study, it is our strong opinion that this variety is perfectly genuine and the presence of the red flecks argues in favor of that genuineness. Unique to our best knowledge, this great note belongs in a collection of important errors." We sold the note again six years later to our present consignor in our January, 1999 sale, where it realized $10,450. On re-examination six years later, our opinion of the genuineness of this error remains unchanged. The yellow ink used on a plate previously used for red has pulled out tiny red remainders from the recesses of the plate. Any chemical or physical attempt at alteration would yield totally different results. Lot:15018
