Fr. 120 $10 1901 Legal Tender Unique Type 2 Star Note Very Good. Face plate number standardization began in October 1916 for several denominations and classes of notes while the Teehee-Burke notes were being issued. For Bisons this resulted in the face plate number being relocated from below the plate letter. It would be moved up and to the right so that it would be level with the plate letter. Only four Type 2 face plates were engraved - 117, 118, 119, and 120. Until now, a Star note was unreported from those Type 2 face plates. This unique Type 2 Star carries face plate D118. Despite the terms "Face Plate I and Face Plate II" in The Comprehensive Catalog of United States Large Size Star Notes 1910 - 1929, the author Douglas D. Murray, uses the terminology "Type 1 and Type 2" to distinguish between the two face plate number layouts. This Bison has a nice overprint for the grade, while the back shows a tape repair, and the right-hand edge has an approximate half-inch tear. Nonetheless, it cannot be exaggerated how critically important this Bison is in the evolution of the study of Large Size Stars.
From the collection of Richard Merlau
