Fr. 1166b $20 1863 Gold Certificate CGA About Unc
Fr. 1166b $20 1863 Gold Certificate CGA About Uncirculated 50. This is one of only two existing 1863 Gold certificates with a handwritten countersignature, and one of four examples for the entire 1863 $20 Gold Certificate issue. Of the four examples, one of the engraved countersignature pieces, grading Very Fine, has been off the market since 1990, while the other, also grading Very Fine, sold in June of 1999 for $396,000 and was resold exactly one year later at public auction in Memphis for $528,000. Of the handwritten variety, one sold in March of 2001 for $242,000, while this piece sold in January of 1999 for $357,500. This handsome example of a design type which few collectors and dealers have ever seen is sharply printed with bold ink colors and good paper quality. There are some extremely well-done restorations at the outer edges of the margins, and the upper corner tips have been replaced. This work has been executed with such skill that it is virtually undetectable. These restorations do not reach the design and affect the blank margin areas only. No collection of Gold Certificates can be considered complete without an example of this excessively rare type. The description above was used by us in the September 21, 2001 appearance of this note, and in spite of that financially chaotic time, the note realized a solid $157,500 -- a figure that should be left in the dust in today's market.
