Fr. 1133 $1000 1918 Federal Reserve Note Very Good-Fi
Fr. 1133 $1000 1918 Federal Reserve Note Very Good-Fine. When the Friedberg numbering system was developed in 1953, 1918 Five Hundreds and Thousands were each assigned a single number: Fr. 1132 for $500's, and Fr. 1133 for $1000's. This ignored varieties of signature combinations and districts, unlike the Friedberg numbers assigned to notes from the five-dollar through one-hundred-dollar denominations. This apparently was done as a simple expedient, as no one collected - or for that matter even saw - these high-denomination Large Size Feds. As a result, we have always had a tail-wagging-the-dog pricing structure, with little attention paid to the fact that some Friedberg numbers that were never assigned, like this Boston District note, are extreme rarities, while other districts, such as San Francisco, are relatively common. This well-circulated Boston Thousand is one of only three known to exist: a VF reported fifteen years ago by serial number only, current whereabouts unknown to us, and a VF-EF in the Smithsonian comprise the other two. This present offering of this well-circulated albeit solid piece may represent the only opportunity to obtain a Large Size Boston Thousand for decades to come. The surfaces are a bit soft, and there is a short tear in the right-hand margin, but the note has an excellent overall appearance for the grade. Lot:16784
