Fr. 1132 $500 1918 Federal Reserve Note Extremely Fin
Fr. 1132 $500 1918 Federal Reserve Note Extremely Fine-About New. One of the better examples of the thirteen known pieces from the Kansas City District. Just as with the Thousands, when the Friedberg numbering system was developed in 1953, 1918 Five Hundreds were assigned a single number, Fr. 1132. This ignored varieties of signature combinations and districts, unlike the Friedberg numbers assigned to the notes from the five-dollar through one-hundred-dollar denominations. This apparently was done as a simple expedient, as no one collected - or for that matter even saw - these high-denomination Large Size Feds. As a result, we have always had a tail-wagging-the-dog pricing structure, with little attention paid to the fact that some Friedberg numbers that were never assigned are far rarer than others. This Kansas City note, were it to have its own Friedberg number, would be mid-value, with about a dozen known. While others in this collection, such as the St. Louis above or Dallas below, would be priced multiples higher, sophisticated buyers are beginning to wake up to this anomaly. But in our opinion, the market for rarer districts seems to still have a long way to go. This note is a real beauty, separated from the Gem New grade by three light folds. Lot:16782
