Fr. 11 $20 1861 Demand Note PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. Hessler 700B. The original Demand Notes authorized in 1861 were designed and sent to press with "For The" missing from the signature lines. They were thus handwritten on all issues until new plates were engraved in August of 1861. The uniface proof pair here was printed from plates prepared that month and reflect the small engraving change. Plate C is noted on the face and both pieces are mounted on card stock. Both the notes and the card stock remain bright and unfettered by age. Solid serial number 00000 is used and there are four hole cancels. Regular issue $20 Demand Notes are extremely scarce, with only one handwritten "for the" known. While the Friedberg reference would lead one to believe that the New York, Philadelphia, and Boston issues are attainable, they are anything but. Mid-grade notes command near six-figures, with the last piece offered over a year ago.

Coin Engraver: probably Joseph Wright

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
