Fr. 1072a $100 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. One of the highest grade examples of a significant type note that we have yet seen from either of the two major grading services. It's an absolutely impeccable beauty, and one of the finest, if not the finest $100 Red Seal Fed in existence. Until the appearance of a small run of spectacular Boston Red Seal Hundreds on the market, this was a type that had been unavailable in Gem condition to most collectors, as fewer than ten uncirculated examples had been known for all districts combined. In the mid-1980's, this note appeared at the Memphis show as part of an 18-note consecutive run, all of which were purchased by this cataloger and Kevin Foley. This particular note was picked as the best of the group and sold to a personal friend who kept it in his collection for a decade and a half. It changed hands several times in the last four years, and now another collector will have the opportunity to enjoy this pristine piece. It's deeply embossed, beautifully bright and perfect in both the technical and visual contexts. The Green Sheet has recently added a Superb 67 column and priced most all types in that grade. Both "bid" and "ask" are blank for Red Seal Hundreds. This beauty should give them a nice high number to plug in to that vacant column.
