Fr. 1022a $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Very Fine 25. In a similar identity crisis, as with the 1017a above, most references consider this a 1022. In this cataloger's opinion, 1022a, which is what PMG used, is correct. 1022, which Track & Price uses, is not. The situation with 1017 and 1022 is identical, but Track & Price and PMG have exchanged their positions. One wants the "a" and one doesn't, but they switch back and forth. In any event, only this "a" variety exists for Dallas Red Seal Fifties, and it's quite rare. Eighteen notes are known, with this one the highest yet graded and in the top three with Track & Price. The note is a solid VF, with bold, red color and no problems whatever. We sold a raw Very Good in September of 2007 for over $4000, and a PCGS 20 auctioned earlier in 2007 for $6670.
From The Thomas M.
