Fr. 1018a $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note
Fr. 1018a $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. This is an extremely rare number, with only six pieces listed in the census. Tom has owned this note long enough that it is new to the census, bringing the total to seven. Two of the seven notes are permanently impounded: one in the Smithsonian and one in the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Only two have ever auctioned: a high-end circulated note in 1990 and a VG in 2003. Save for the 1990 note, and the serial-number 1 in the San Francisco Fed, the other listed pieces are Fine and under. This note, which very likely will remain permanently as the finest known, has the appearance of a Gem, with its magnificent color, broad margins and perfect print quality. We have no doubt that there is a fold or two causing the 45 grade, but we certainly can't find them in the holder. A beautiful note. And very, very rare.
From The Thomas M.
